Coaching or Managing?
Are your managers coaching employees or managing employees?
Gallup's recently re-cited article on Employee Engagement states that one important element in improving employee engagement is for managers to become coaches.
"People are looking for more than just a paycheck. They want purpose and meaning from their work. They want to be known for what makes them unique. And they want relationships, particularly with a manager who can coach them to the next level."
It goes on further to state:
"EXCEPTIONAL MANAGERS ARE:
• Strengths-based
• Engagement-focused
• Performance-oriented
As managers shift from being bosses to being coaches focused on engagement and development, their team’s engagement becomes higher and more consistent over time."
Working with a coach is a completely different experience than working with a boss or manager. As a trained and ICF-Certified Coach, one of my goals is to help managers make this transition. I believe as a greater number of people make that change, the more their teams will thrive and the more their organizations will thrive.
