Oh, Imposter!!

Each of us has hundreds of inner critics, or imposters, that present themselves regularly in our lives. Regardless of your age or title, imposters show up but often won’t shut up! Some can be loud while others nonchalantly whisper….🤫

“When there is an imbalance between confidence and competence, issues of either arrogance or imposterdom arise. Both types of people need to move toward the other side of the spectrum to get to a place where there is a healthy dose of confidence and humility, also known as “confident humility.”

Oftentimes, people are unaware or refuse to admit that imposter syndrome is even occurring and the lack of both self-awareness and use of positive intelligence can have detrimental affects on their leadership effectiveness and performance.

As a Coach, one of my goals is to help my clients acknowledge the imposters and devise ways to mitigate their negativity and impact.

Why?

👉Because if we don’t address the inner critic, it can be most difficult to address anything else such as helping someone truly move forward in achieving their goals and/or appropriately leading their team.

Another way to look at it is, unfortunately, imposters can be foundational in how we operate as individuals. But WHAT IF we were able to turn down the volume on one, or even several? What could then be the outcome or possibilities?!

An article I came across yesterday by Vatsala Sarathy, ACC provided various strategies to accomplish this. I’ve starred the strategies that come up most often in my coaching engagements:

1. Embrace uncertainty
2. No one knows everything
3. Believe in yourself*
4. Keep a success inventory*
5. Reframe your perspective*
6. You don’t have all the answers
7. Breathe*
8. Reconnect with your purpose*

These strategies resonate as they are part of my guiding principles:

“Find excitement in fear. Feel gratitude and curiosity amidst anxiety. Don’t let negative emotions control the narrative, and you will find the courage to act.

Re-orient yourself to your guiding values – what you stand for, what motivates you, and what matters to you. Purpose gives us the courage to move forward even when afraid.”

And…Celebrate successes!
